Cost Breakdown:
- Zipcar Registration- $25.00
- Zipcar Usage-$132.23
- Bart-$128.85
- Parking Ticket-$55.00
- 1.5 months of Car Insurance-$210.00
- Bike Maintenance-$5.00
Total Cost if I didnt have a car-$291.08
Total Cost if I just drove a car-$~290.00 (car insurance, gas, parking ticket)
Interpret this for me please! Had I not gotten a parking ticket, it seems like it would have been cheaper to have my own car.
Though there are some other aspects I havent factored in here. I wouldn't be using the car daily, but insurance would remain constant, I would also have to factor in the cost of repairing my car, which might be about $1000.00 for the work it needs now.
It seems like just using the car only when it is essential (driving someone to the airport, driving to a clients house at the top of Grizzley Peak, etc...) but not driving to the laundramat or other errands that would be simpliar with a car, but could be done by bike...
Still another thought is getting a bio-diesel car.
I did drive the car yesterday when I could have ridden my bike. But I intend on just keeping up with this for as long as possible. Maybe changing my insurance to something less expensive and only driving when I absolutley must...
Any thoughts on all this?

Hi Jonathan! Congratulations on the 1 month without a car trial.
It all comes down to how much you really need a car to do your work, put aside the should I have the car and use it or not having a car at all.
So if you definitely need a car the zip car seems best because you combined the use of your bike and it ended cheaper that way. The main reasons I can think of are: a) you don't have to worry about car maintainence, when it comes to it. b) You can be less dependent on a car as you will not have it at your doorstep. c) No car insurance payment.
d) and you will be doing a favor to the environment and your health.
